How is depression diagnosed?
There is no single test for depression. Instead, your doctor will ask you
how you’ve been feeling and if there have been any changes in your life - a
recent loss or crisis - that may have affected your mood. Your doctor will
want to know if you are taking any medications which might have
psychological effects or if there is a history of mental illness or
substance abuse in your family. It’s important to see your doctor if you
are concerned that you may be depressed. Major depressive disorders remain
largely undiagnosed due to the stigma surrounding mental illness, but once
diagnosed, depression can be treated and you can move on with your life.
