Products in development
Our R&D strategy is directed towards our major therapeutic areas: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hypertension, stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, diabetes, depression, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Parkinson's disease, cancer, virology, hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) and other respiratory diseases.
Developing new treatments and forging new partnerships to find solutions for disease.
Research and development has been the
foundation of our company’s success and continues to be the major driver of
innovative new medicines for the treatment of diseases with an unmet
therapeutic need. Furthermore, in our constant quest for pharmaceutical
innovation we have many successful ongoing partnerships and are actively
seeking new collaborations with external partners, ranging from academic
institutions to biopharmaceutical enterprises and start-up companies.
Highlights of some products currently in development:
Our research and development teams around the world have been working on a new medication to help treat and prevent venous thrombo-embolism (VTE).
Those who suffer from hypoactive
sexual desire disorder (HSDD) experience low sexual desire, which can cause
great emotional distress. Sexual dysfunction can be difficult to discuss and
many doctors do not know how to help patients with HSDD. The study of sexual
dysfunction is a fairly new research area and Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada)
Ltd./Ltée. is involved in finding treatment options.
Patients with diabetes type II have to constantly manage their blood sugar levels and deal with many other complications of their disease. Our research and development teams have been developing medications to inhibit glucose reabsorption into the body and continue to find new solutions.
We are currently researching treatments for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using three therapeutic principles. The first principle uses signal transduction inhibitors to halt epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs); the second principle uses the concept of inhibition of tumour blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and the third therapeutic principle targets the inhibition of cell division (mitosis).
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a condition involving an irregular heart rhythm. AF increases your risk of stroke and it is estimated that up to 15% of all strokes are due to atrial fibrillation. It is estimated that individuals with atrial fibrillation have 4 to 5 times greater risk for ischemic stroke. Researchers are is currently working on new ways to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation.
